Conversation Starters
Advance Care Planning is about the conversation.

We know that most people realize this, but it can still be hard to start.

Some sample starter statements and questions:
"I've been thinking about what it's like to be old in our country, and I want to be sure that my wishes are followed when I get there."
"Do you remember when my uncle died?  Our whole family was confused because no one knew what to do.  Do you think we should talk about what we want, to make sure it's easier for our family if something were to happen to one of us?"
"Have you ever thought about what you would want if you were in a coma?  I've found myself thinking about that lately ...."
"When I was at the doctor's office for my regular check-up last month, they asked if I have done any Advance Care Planning, and now I've been thinking about it ...."

Watch a video, read an article, or visit a website.  Then, at dinner or while driving, mention it and something that struck you.
"Last week I saw this video where a woman was talking about her dad's accident - she really made me think about what I would want if I had an accident ..."
"I was watching this video online about how often families argue when a family member is seriously ill.  Do you think our family will be like that?"
"There's this great TED Talk where a doctor talks about what's really important to live well.  Can I share it with you?"
"I just read this article about whether or not to treat a tumor.  I had never thought that way before and it got me wondering ....."

Watch for windows of opportunity - for example, if you are visiting someone in a nursing home, or are attending someone's memorial service, or see a movie where a major character dies - and use that to start a conversation.
"Last weekend I saw a good movie.  The main character's mother dies after an accident, and it got me to thinking what I would do if that happened in our family."
"It sure was good to see Grandma comfortable in her care facility.  When I am that age, this is what I would want to happen to me ...."
